Is the game still beautiful? How FIFA’s federal system absorbs scandal

Folarin Balogun had been sent off the field after a VAR review for a dangerous challenge. Ordinarily, a World Cup red card carries a simple consequence: the player misses the next match. Yet, the case did not end with the referee’s decision. [President Donald Trump reportedly](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/07/05/us/politics/trump-fifa-balogun-world-cup.html) made three calls to the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, pressing for Balogun’s one-match suspension to be lifted. [FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee then suspended implementation of the ban](https://media.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/fwc2026/news/statement-from-the-chairperson-of-the-fifa-disciplinary-committee-6-july-2026) for a one-year probationary period under [Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code](https://digitalhub.fifa.com/m/6094262690de769/original/FIFA-Disciplinary-Code-2025.pdf). [UEFA, the European confederation, reacted](https://www.uefa.com/news-media/news/02a7-2109c8e9ef81-de5a993db109-1000--uefa-statement-on-the-balogun-case/) with unusual severity. The decision, it said, had "crossed a red line" and was "unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable".
