Autonomy is expressed not only through laws and institutions. It shapes everyday life in South Tyrol – in schools and public administration, in the use of multiple languages, in the media and in relations across society. Today's autonomy system emerged from a history of conflict, lengthy negotiations and political compromise. It combines territorial self-government with the protection of linguistic and cultural minorities.

How can different language groups live together peacefully? What fosters social cohesion in diverse societies? Which political, legal and social conditions allow autonomy to endure? What role do the media play in minority protection, democratic participation and a shared public sphere? What can be learned from the history of autonomy and efforts to protect minorities? And which aspects of South Tyrol's experience may be relevant to other regions?

We address these questions through interdisciplinary research and make knowledge about South Tyrol's autonomy accessible to people both within the region and beyond. We organise delegation and study visits, develop educational programmes for school pupils and adults, and provide insights into the historical background, legal foundations and political functioning of South Tyrol's autonomy.
