Budapest and Berlin: comparing memories

In its "Resolution of 19 September 2019" on the importance of European remembrance for the future of Europe, quoted in the recent "Resolution of 17 January 2024" on European historical consciousness, the European Parliament, recalling the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, condemned, by placing them on an equal level, the Stalinist regime and the German National Socialist regime and called on all European states to adopt appropriate countermeasures against both ideologies. The resolution provides an opportunity to reflect on how, within the EU itself, countries with similar recent pasts still remember the two totalitarian regimes in different ways. In this regard, comparing the capitals of Hungary and Germany and their "places of memory" can be insightful.
