Issue 87 of Academia Magazine – “zoom in, zoom out” – explores the growing complexity of our world: some people dive deep into every detail, while others maintain an overview and connect the dots. Research needs both approaches. In the biomedical laboratories at Eurac Research, tiny 3D models of the human brain are being created to help understand how neurodegenerative diseases develop and how they might one day be prevented. At the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, experts in soil science, design, and education work together to raise awareness among local communities about the hidden biodiversity of the Galápagos Islands – life that remained invisible for millions of years and is now coming to light.
