I trend delle nevicate dal 1980 al 2020 sono diffusamente negativi in tutto il Trentino Alto Adige, con picchi fino a meno 75 per cento. I dati più negativi si registrano a inizio e fine stagione; solo nel cuore dell’inverno, tra gennaio e febbraio, e attorno 2.000 metri di quota, le nevicate sono stabili o addirittura in crescita in poche stazioni di misurazione come quelle dei passi Rolle e Tonale, che registrano un aumento attorno al 15 per cento. Nei fondovalle la mancanza di neve, pur non danneggiando direttamente l’economia dello sci, ha comunque cambiato la percezione dell’inverno.

Il desiderio di essere maggiormente a contatto con la natura spinge sempre più persone a trascorrere del tempo in montagna. Si tratta di una tendenza positiva che però si accompagna a un aumento degli incidenti. Per rilevare aspetti rilevanti del comportamento tenuto da chi pratica attività sportive in montagna, il team di ricerca di Eurac Research ha svolto un'indagine non rappresentativa, ma utile a inquadrare il fenomeno. Sono stati compilati più di 3800 questionari online da residenti in Trentino-Alto Adige e Tirolo e intervistati di persona circa 300 turisti nella zona di Sesto Pusteria.

Extreme events are intense weather phenomena that usually have a high return time - taking up to several decades before an event of the same type occurs again. However, climate change is modifying the situation: extreme events are becoming more frequent, and this requires a rethinking of how they are reported, modeled and dealt with.

Since 1981, a research project has analysed the extreme events that have affected certain Alpine regions. The results of which have enabled new models to manage them better.

What is an extreme event?

Algorithms and statistical models for water management are becoming increasingly accurate. Especially in Europe and the economically developed countries, forecasting models process a huge amount of very detailed data from weather stations and satellite maps estimating snow cover. By cross-referencing these and other physical data, they are able to estimate how much water will be available in a certain area in the near future. However,  not everything always works out as it should. 

Mathematical models for drought management would be more effective if they used social and cultural variables - how these solutions can best be integrated is the subject of current research.
