Joan Vall Clara: “Subscribers are our main source of funding”
This year marks the 50th anniversary of *Avui*, the first Catalan-language newspaper founded after the Franco dictatorship. Acquired by *El Punt* in 2009 and since published as *El Punt Avui*, the newspaper is now led by Joan Vall Clara, its editor and majority shareholder. Born in Calonge, Catalonia, in 1958, Vall Clara studied journalism and law before later specialising in business management. He joined the newsroom of *El Punt* in 1981 as a journalist and served as editor from 1989 to 1992. After the merger of *El Punt* and *Avui*, he moved into management roles, before returning to the editorship in 2022 following the departure of Xevi Xirgo. He has announced that he will step down in 2029.
