Burgenland Croats battle for Croatian schooling in Vienna
The Burgenland Croats in Vienna want to establish a bilingual school – minority protection does not apply in the capital It is 49 kilometres from Pandrof/Parndorf to Schwindgasse in Vienna's fourth district. It's only three quarters of an hour by car, but for Burgenland Croats it's a journey into another world: in Parndorf and the other villages in their settlement area in Burgenland, the minority enjoys a certain, albeit completely inadequate, level of protection, but in Vienna, where 15,000 Burgenland Croats live, they have nothing at all. Not even a school where Croatian is spoken. But the Croatian Centre, based at Schwindgasse 14, now wants to change that.
