From the Pitch to Linguistic Prestige: How Did Morocco’s World Cup Run Reshape Perceptions?

Moreover, interviews with Moroccan players and their coach, Walid Regragui, showcased a natural mix of Darija, Modern Standard Arabic, and other European languages, highlighting the country’s linguistic fluidity and exposing millions to the rhythm and expressions of Moroccan Arabic. These interviews reinforced the legitimacy of Darija as a language of expression at the international level.

Additionally, the visibility of Amazigh identity during the tournament played an important role in reinforcing linguistic diversity. The Amazigh flag was frequently displayed by Moroccan fans and players, highlighting Morocco’s indigenous heritage.
