Friendly words, empty promises: Minority rights in Denmark facing uncertainty

Denmark’s political stance reveals a deeper problem: despite the close relationship with the German minority, there remains a lack of understanding of how crucial minority rights are to a peaceful Europe.

Especially in a stable country like Denmark, responsibility is key – towards states where minority rights are under threat, towards individuals fighting daily for recognition, and towards a European order built on diversity as a strength.

But diversity is not always seen as a strength. ‘Why is it so hard for Danes to understand that identity can be multifaceted?’, asked Dorthe Andresen in a widely read letter to the editor at Der Nordschleswiger. Her experience: even in 2025, speaking German can still provoke hostility – especially when identities do not fit neatly into boxes.

In this light, political hesitation is twice as damaging. Protecting diversity also means protecting social cohesion.

In an era where democracies around the world are under strain, and even long-standing allies like the United States can no longer guarantee safety for minorities, strong signals are needed. Signals that rights are not just local promises but universal principles.

A clear step would be for Denmark to assume new commitments under the Language Charter. Not a revolutionary act. Not a political risk. But a consistent affirmation of what Denmark already practises – and a vital message to minorities in countries like Serbia, Romania or Ukraine: Europe sees you, and Europe stands with you.

Minority rights are not a feel-good extra – they are a benchmark for democratic stability. Rights only carry weight when enshrined in law. Goodwill from those in power is important. But it cannot be relied upon when political tides shift.

Denmark could lead by example. Instead, it responds with polite silence – and once again misses the opportunity to live up to its responsibility.
