At the European Association of Daily Newspapers in Minority and Regional Languages (MIDAS), our mission is clear: to protect and promote minority and regional languages through the medium of daily newspapers. These publications do more than provide essential news; they act as cultural beacons, safeguarding and celebrating the rich tapestries of Europe’s marginalized groups and cultures. By bringing minority voices to the forefront, MIDAS aims to bridge linguistic divides, fostering a deeper understanding and recognition across Europe and build on its diversity. In a (more and more digital) world where major languages dominate the media landscape, minority and regional languages often struggle to find their voice. And although printed daily newspapers may seem ‘old-fashioned’, they play a crucial role not only in providing information but also in fostering a sense of identity and community among speakers. They are vital in preserving the linguistic diversity that is an integral part of Europe's cultural heritage.

Needless to say, that the primary role of these newspapers is to report in their respective minority languages, ensuring that their respective minority languages continue to thrive. However, many of these stories remain unread by the majority. Through this blog, we hope - with the permission of the respective journalists and researchers - to contribute by providing selected stories in English and thereby making them accessible to a broader audience.

Here, we will share stories that matter, interviews with experts and minority representatives, shedding light on the unique experiences of minorities throughout Europe and giving them a voice. Through a mix of interdisciplinary insights and first-hand narratives, our blog navigates the complexities of minority issues and linguistic rights. We will feature contributions from journalists within the MIDAS network, as well as from researchers at Eurac Research and other esteemed institutions.

We invite you to join us on this journey. Whether you are a journalist, a researcher, or a member of a minority or majority community, stay tuned for our upcoming posts and be part of the conversation. Welcome to our blog. Let's begin the dialogue.

Sincerely,

Marc Röggla General-Secretary of the European Association of Daily Newspapers in Minority and Regional Languages (MIDAS)
