A traditional code and its consequences: how Pashtunwali affects women and minorities in Afghanistan

While Afghanistan is a country with ethnic diversity, its jurisdiction and economy do not reflect that diversity. In particular, one traditional social code that shapes life in many areas is Pashtunwali, a mixture of a tribal code of honor and local interpretations of religion. This code, among other things, emphasizes hospitality, family honor, and the protection of female relatives. However, Pashtunwali has also been associated with the exclusion of women from all affairs outside the home and with discrimination against minorities.
