Narrating Crisis, Governing Migration: On the Politics of Interpretation

How do political events come to mean what they do? In Germany, moments of crisis – from terrorist attacks to far-right electoral gains – are often framed as caused by migration. But these meanings are not self-evident; they are shaped by dominant media narratives that link migration to disorder and in turn define the scope of public debate. This blog post examines how such narratives take hold, how they depoliticize migration, and why their construction is central to understanding the dynamics of democratic discourse and the politics of migration.
