On May 28, Governor Arno Kompatscher was officially presented with the new two-volume publication "Safeguarding Mountain Social-Ecological Systems – A Global Challenge" by Eurac Research. The work was realized with the support of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano-South Tyrol and within the framework of the joint program with the United Nations University.

The two volumes compile current research results and concrete solutions for the challenges in mountain regions worldwide – from glacier retreat and biodiversity loss to social and economic changes.
About 900 million people live in mountainous areas. Mountains are considered the "water towers of the world" as they supply fresh water to about half of the world's population. This is precisely where the GLOMOS program, based at Eurac Research, comes into play: Through applied, transdisciplinary research, it helps to secure natural and economic resources and thus the livelihoods in the mountains in the long term.

Paola Fontanella Pisa and Stefan Schneiderbauer of Eurac Research, both members of the editorial team, emphasize: "Many impacts begin in the mountains – but they do not end there." Volume 1 presents international networks and policy frameworks, while Volume 2 delves deeper into the subject with case studies from the Himalayas, Africa, Latin America, and Europe.
Governor Arno Kompatscher underscores: "This publication impressively shows how even a small region like South Tyrol can contribute to the global debate on sustainability."
