Glaciers and Mountains in Transformation: Adaptation, Culture, and Climate Action from Above
From 6 to 17 October 2025, the IPROMO Latin America 2025 virtual course, “Glaciers and mountains in transformation: adaptation, culture, and climate action from above,” brought together 30 professionals and community leaders from nine Latin American countries, with strong participation from Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Bolivia.
Organized by CONDESAN with the support of the Adaptation at Altitude Programme, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), and the Mountain Partnership of FAO, the course focused on strengthening the capacities of those working in mountain territories to address the challenges of climate change, conservation, and water management. Participants included policy implementers, project managers, researchers, postgraduate students, technical experts, and community leaders who share a common goal: advancing climate adaptation and sustainable mountain development in their regions.

IPROMO Latin America provided participants with practical tools to design local solutions and scale their impacts, methodologies to translate science into action, and cultural and ecological criteria to evaluate projects. The course also created valuable spaces to highlight local knowledge, exchange regional experiences, and promote inclusive governance in mountain areas.
Our GLOMOS expert, Lina Rodriguez, facilitated the sessions held on 13 and 14 October under the theme “Voices from the Mountains: What We Learned from the Solutions.” Drawing on her experience assessing successful adaptation solutions in the Andes as part of the Adaptation at Altitude Programme, Lina guided participants in an in-depth analysis of diverse adaptation measures, exploring their effectiveness, sustainability, key success factors, and ongoing challenges.
Lina shared insights from fieldwork, emphasizing the importance of returning to projects after their completion to understand their long-term outcomes and impacts. Lina also presented the methodology used to evaluate adaptation solutions and the main lessons derived from this process. Alongside other facilitators, she supported participants in reviewing and reflecting on adaptation initiatives proposed by their peers, fostering a constructive dialogue on practical approaches to strengthen resilience and promote transformative climate action in mountain communities.
