Contamination of high-altitude springs linked to glacial retreat is more widespread than previously thought

Chemical analysis of 80 water springs in Trentino-Alto Adige and Tyrol reveals high levels of heavy metals, linked to geology and the retreat of glaciers and permafrost.

A study analyzed water from 80 springs in the Central-Eastern Alps, revealing that, in valleys with certain very common rock types, springs originating from permafrost and glacial areas are characterized by high levels of heavy metals. The phenomenon is linked to local geology and the retreat of ice, and affects springs originating from glaciers, rock glaciers, recently formed moraines and debris cones – landscape features that also serve as important Alpine water reservoirs.

The Lazaun rock glacier. A rock glacier is a rock debris mass containing ice. When the ice melts, water comes into contact with rocks which can promote the release of metals, contributing to contamination of downstream water sources.
