Cooperation matters: Some lessons from the intermunicipal cooperation in the Alpine Region

Alpine municipalities – like many other local entities in Europe – increasingly rely on collaboration to address their challenges: upward with the subnational legislator, and outward with private actors, but especially also with other (neighboring) municipalities. Intermunicipal cooperation (IMC), due to its administrative and simultaneously executive nature, can be understood as a special form of intergovernmental cooperation.
