Playing with in/visibility at the border: between so-called “migration crises” and “ghost landings” in the Mediterranean

The images of (so-called) “migration crises” happening along Europe’s border have come to monopolize public debates on migration and profoundly impacted national and European Union (EU) politics. Nonetheless, a close look at the functioning of the border reveals how arrivals at the EU external frontier tell very little about the size and modes of migration to Europe.
