Why I didn't learn Basque at school

In this article, Ignacio Escala Estanga, reflects on his personal experience of not having learned Basque in Nafarroa/Navarre within an educational and familiar context where the natural presence of Basque culture and its ignorance seem to coexist in perfect harmony. He analyzes the presence of the Basque language in the complex educative system in Nafarroa/Navarre, which is structured in five different models designed to match the diverse and gradual cultural sensibilities that run through this territory. This ranges from the North, where Basque culture is deeply rooted, to the South, where it’s nearly absent. Supported by demographic data, the piece offers a personal insight into the long-standing coexistence of two truly heterogeneous cultures and how the Basque language can play a key role as a bridge or as a barrier between them.
