GLOMOS at the 7th Global Meeting of the Mountain Partnership

The GLOMOS team, represented by Dr. Stefan Schneiderbauer and Dr. Paola Fontanella Pisa, participated in the 7th Global Meeting of the Mountain Partnership, held in Andorra from 26 to 28 March 2026. This high level gathering brought together Mountain Partnership members and partners from across regions and sectors to reflect on progress made since the previous Global Meeting in 2022 and to strengthen collaboration for the years ahead.

As the final Global Meeting before the conclusion of the Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions (2023–2027) and a key moment toward delivering the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the event marked an important milestone. Discussions throughout the three days focused on accelerating action and ensuring that mountain sustainability and resilience are firmly embedded in global processes, policies, and investments.

Youth, knowledge, and future oriented action

The meeting also featured an invited panel intervention by Dr. Paola Fontanella Pisa in the parallel session “Youth at the table: advocacy, education, early careers.” The session highlighted the growing role of youth in shaping mountain agendas at both community and governance levels, emphasizing the need to institutionalize meaningful youth participation in decision making processes. Panelists discussed the importance of youth in sharing local stories and lived experiences, the power of local action, and the value of building alliances that bring together diverse capacities and perspectives.

Drawing on her research experience at the interface of cultural heritage, risk reduction, and community resilience, Paola shared insights on how knowledge from the past can inform forward looking strategies. Her contribution illustrated how heritage can function as an active resource for resilience, rather than a static legacy, and why supporting youth engagement and investing in early career researchers is essential to foster credible, future oriented action in mountain regions.

Strengthening collective action for mountain regions

Across the three days of discussions, participants repeatedly underscored that preserving mountain ecosystems is fundamental to building a sustainable and resilient future for all, far beyond mountain regions themselves. Bringing together Mountain Partnership members and partners from diverse geographical and institutional contexts was both timely and necessary, reinforcing the urgency of coordinated and collective action in support of mountain communities and ecosystems.
