SDG 6 Progress is Off Track, Warns UN World Water Development Report 2025
The newly released United Nations World Water Development Report 2025: Mountains and glaciers - Water towers reveals that progress toward all targets of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 is off track, with some targets severely lagging. SDG 6 aims to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
Billions of people rely on freshwater from mountain environments, but climate change and unsustainable human activities are putting these crucial “water towers” at risk. Global warming is accelerating glacier melt, reducing snow cover, intensifying permafrost thaw, and increasing extreme weather events and natural hazards. As a result, mountain water flows are becoming increasingly unpredictable and inconsistent. Changes in the timing and volume of peak and low water flows, along with rising erosion and sediment levels, will affect downstream water resources in terms of availability, timing, and quality.
