The project Voices of Heritage Languages - a collaboration between Eurac Research’s Institute for Applied Linguistics and the Center for Migration and Societal Change as well as the two Swiss Universities of Teacher Education Bern (PHB) and Lucerne (PHL) - has officially started on the 1st of January, 2026.
The three research teams, comprising a total of 9 academics from a variety of disciplines, will seek to investigate the role of Heritage Languages specifically in educational settings in South Tyrol and in the Cantons of Bern and Lucerne.
A major focus will be on social cohesion in post-migrant and post-multilingual societies, from a cross-regional comparative perspective.
The project’s methodology is marked by a mixed methods approach, which includes more traditional methods and participatory arts-based methods. The latter in particular, will be used in workshops tailored to younger participants, and aim to explore the discursive, bodily, and emotional dimensions of learning a heritage language.
