Together with the University of Padua and the South Tyrolean Agency for Civil Protection, the Institute for Earth Observation at Eurac Research is developing the new Hydro Portal – a digital platform designed to make hydrological data in South Tyrol easier to access, explore and use.
The project, funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), aims to bring together key datasets related to quantitative hydrology – such as river discharge, water levels and precipitation events – and make them available through a user-friendly digital interface. These data are essential for flood protection, water management, spatial planning, and scientific research. A core component of the platform builds on the existing Meteo Browser, originally developed at Eurac Research. Within the project, the system is being technically upgraded and expanded with a modernized interface, improved data exploration tools and additional datasets to allow users to more easily visualize, filter and download time series.
On the 3rd of March, we presented the latest progress during a stakeholder meeting with more than 60 participants from industry, public administration and research – including representatives from organizations such as the local Fishery Association, the regional energy company Alperia Group, and the University of Trento and University of Padua. The exchange with future users is a key part of the process and helps ensure the platform meets real-world needs.
By improving access to high-quality hydrological data, the Hydro Portal contributes to the digital transformation of water and risk management in South Tyrol and supports evidence-based decision-making, particularly in the context of climate change and increasing extreme weather events.
