2026 International Political Science Association (IPSA) RESEARCH COMMITTEES COLLOQUIUM

Between June 23rd and 26th, the Institute for Minority Rights and the Center for Autonomy Experience of Eurac Research will co-host the 2026 International Political Science Association (IPSA) RESEARCH COMMITTEES COLLOQUIUM: “Minorities Under Siege? Plural Societies Facing Plural Challenges.”

Organized every two years by the IPSA Research Committee for Politics and Ethnicity (RC14), this year’s colloquium will focus on various themes related to the politics of ethnicity, from nationalism and nation-building to the formation and mobilization of collective identities, cultural pluralism, irredentism and separatism, as well as questions of race, religion, language, immigration, and citizenship.

We will explore new research in such areas as global socio-economic changes, renationalizing movements, current conflicts, and technological developments and their impact on minority protection, diversity accommodation, constitutional democratic arrangements, and federal structures.

We expect upwards of 130 participants and 39 panels, two of which will take place online, with four book panels, and one editor’s panel. There will also be two roundtables, one on “South Tyrol: Past (Un)successes and Future Challenges in a Volatile World” and the other on “Challenges and Future of Minority Rights.”

Lastly, the colloquium will host Prof. Mohammad Shahabuddin, who will give the keynote address and the Eurac Research Annual Minority Rights Lecture on “Minorities Under Siege: Postcolonial and Decolonial Perspectives.”
