On 13–14 April 2026, Francesca Rosignoli, Senior Researcher at the Institute for Minority Rights and the Institute for Comparative Federalism, presented a paper at the Global Environmental Justice Conference hosted by Colorado State University (Fort Collins, Colorado, US). The paper, “Climate Assemblies: A Tool for Doing Environmental Justice and Improving Participatory Democracy? The Climate Assemblies in South Tyrol and Vorarlberg as a Case in Point,” critically examined both the potential and the limits of citizen climate assemblies when analyzed through the lens of environmental justice. Drawing on the cases of South Tyrol and Vorarlberg, the contribution reflected on how participatory democratic instruments can address, but also risk overlooking, justice-related dimensions in climate governance. The presentation contributed to ongoing discussions on participatory democracy, environmental justice, and the role of deliberative innovations in climate policy-making.
