Dr. Hanna Vasilevich from EURAC Research’s Institute for Minority Rights will present her paper at the international conference “Radical Right Narratives, Conspiracy Theories, and Vigilantism in an Age of Democratic Decline,” hosted by the University of Deusto in Bilbao, Spain, on October 27–28, 2025.
Her presentation, “Securitizing the Internal Other: Radical Right Narratives, Minority Rights, and Framing in Wartime Ukraine,” examines how Ukraine’s wartime rhetoric of national unity since 2022 has shaped public discourse on ethnic and linguistic minorities. While reinforcing resilience against Russian aggression, this rhetoric has also fostered narratives portraying minorities as potential security threats.
Dr. Vasilevich’s research explores how narratives linking minority groups to security threats can legitimize exclusionary practices and challenge democratic norms.
The study forms part of her ongoing project, “Securitization of Minority Rights in Eastern Europe,” funded by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano/Bozen – South Tyrol.
