About

Giulia has been working as a Post-Doc Researcher at the Institute of Biomedicine since February 2025, where she studies how GBA1 mutations alter cellular lipid homeostasis in Parkinson's disease, with a particular focus on changes in mitochondrial lipids that affect cellular energy metabolism.

Giulia earned her degree in Medical and Molecular Biotechnology at the University of Verona in 2020, contributing to the development of a brain organoid system disease modeling and drug screening. After graduating, she began working on mitochondrial diseases, using brain organoids to investigate the role of thyroid hormone in regulating mitochondrial metabolism during neurodevelopment.

She earned her PhD in Neuroscience in 2025 from the University of Verona, working on evaluating PDE5 inhibitors as reference drugs for Leigh syndrome a rare mitochondrial disease. She studied their ability to normalize mitochondrial defects in neural progenitor cells carrying various mutations of the ATP6 gene, and elucidating their mechanisms of action.
