About

About

Irene is a Senior Researcher leading studies on the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying complex neurological disorders, with a particular focus on genetic forms of Parkinson’s disease. Her work is driven by the need to better understand disease biology and enable more effective, personalized therapeutic strategies.

She investigates how genetic variation influences disease risk and progression, with a focus on iron metabolism, mitochondrial function, and mitochondrial lipid metabolism. By dissecting the role of specific mitochondrial proteins and pathways, she aims to identify novel mechanisms and therapeutic targets.

Her research integrates genetic and functional approaches in advanced human cellular systems, including human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived dopaminergic neurons. These models provide physiologically relevant platforms to study disease mechanisms and are being further developed into complex 3D in vitro systems to better support drug discovery.
