Visualization of Linguistic Information (LInfoVis)

The LInfoVis project is concerned with the development of innovative approaches for the visualization of linguistic data. The visualizations of language data and linguistic information connected to it are based on general principles and methods of information visualization. We are employing and extending existing visualization methods with view to enhancing the use and analysis of the Institute's language resources for research and teaching.
In addition, the project pursues the objective to closely interact with the related research community in order to exchange information and generally move forward research on language visualization.

While “traditional” language resources, ranging from multi-layered treebanks to linked ontologies, encode complex linguistic information, data analysis in the online world faces yet another set of challenges: Data is generated around the clock, comes in huge quantities and reflects events in the digital world in real-time. With this type of data at hand, we need to think about novel ways of visually encoding properties of language, not only to respond to certain trends such as hate speeches and cyber-bullying, but also to investigate the development of language in a more general manner. Visualization offers new methods for processing and analysing online data, and as such, the workshop fits squarely into this year’s hot topic ‘LRs in the Online World’. VisLR III also promotes LREC’s general objectives of bringing together related disciplines. We particularly reach out to disciplines starting to use language resources and visualization to develop their own research agendas, such as the social sciences

Visual Corpus Interface: Putting Text Visualizations at Use

This paper presents the visual corpus interface created within the OPATCH project ('Open Platform for access to and Analysis of Textual documents of Cultural Heritage'). The interface combines a set of visualizations for textual data and language features with the aim to support linguistic analysis. The paper describes the choice of visualizations, their interlinking and their integration with a corpus search engine. It discusses challenges related to data handling and usage scenarios and lays out open needs for future work.

Corpus Clouds: Facilitating Text Analysis by Means of Visualizations

Large text corpora are a main language resource for the human-driven analysis of linguistic phenomena. With the ever increasing amount of data, it is vital to find ways to help people understand the data, and visualization techniques provide one way to do that. Corpus Clouds is a program which pro-vides visualizations of different types of frequency information dynamically de-rived from a corpus via a standard query system, integrated with a standard KWIC display. We apply established principles from information visualization to provide dynamic, interactive representations of the query results. The se-lected design principles and alternatives to the implementation will be discussed and a preview on what other types of information connected to corpora can be visualized in similar ways are provided. Corpus Clouds can thus be seen as an-swer to the call by Collins et al. [1] to design in a principled way new visualiza-tion tools for linguistic data.
