ModEOAlp / Sensing of Ecological processes
The use of remote sensing for monitoring the environment is a widespread technique. In this contest the launch of the Sentinel satellites is starting a new era for what concerns temporal and spatial resolution. This new generation of Earth observation (EO) data will be new ground for statistical tools, as well as algorithmic innovations providing unprecedented possibilities to study ecohydrological processes from micro- (eddy covariance footprint) to macro-scale (watershed to Alps-wide). Linking EO data with ground truth is still necessary and for this reason we rely on spatially explicit ecosystem observations. The recent technological innovation has lead to an upsurge in the availability of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). This technology is offering unexpected opportunities for investigating ecosystems at scale-appropriate observation of ecosystem processes. This project focuses on linking proximal observation of ecosystem functional dynamics with EO data through UAV spectrometry by means of modelling and innovative statistical methods.
