SNOWCOP

Unlocking the full potential of Copernicus data and infrastructure to improve meltwater monitoring in the Andes

SNOWCOP is an EU Horizon Europe-funded project that aims to improve the quantification of meltwater from snow and ice in the Andes and beyond by unlocking the full potential of European Copernicus data and infrastructure. Eurac Research is the project coordinator and provides expertise in mountain cryosphere monitoring as well as EO cloud computing. The objective is to integrate Copernicus data into physical models and implement it in the most advanced cloud infrastructure, such as the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem (CDSE), driving unprecedented innovation in meltwater management.

Glacier Runoff Studies

The figure shows the study area, the glacier on Volcán Azufre, captured in a false-color Sentinel-2 image acquired on January 5, 2023.

The observed discharge is compared with melt outputs from the Temperature Index (TI) and Enhanced Temperature Index (ETI) models. The latter shows a very good agreement with the discharge data.

Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) Dynamics

This animation illustrates daily changes in SWE for the upper Mendoza River Basin (Argentina) from June 1 to November 1, 2022 (winter in the Southern Hemisphere). The SWE maps, produced at 50 m resolution, showcase the ability of our SWE reconstruction method to capture realistic snow patterns with high spatial and temporal accuracy. The results stem from a previous project funded by the Mountain Research Initiative under the GEO Mountains Small Grants 2023 framework.Video: Eurac Research | Valentina Premier
