Is it possible to transform an entire fleet of public buses to zero-emission vehicles? A team from Eurac Research has been working together with local transport companies and other stakeholders to develop a simulation model and collect real world data to understand the feasibility of this type of choice. The initiative has brought the entities together under the aegis of several European projects.

The meeting took place at the NOI Techpark in Bolzano/Bozen, at the end of March 2023. The panel of international experts gathered to discuss the role of research and technology organizations in the implementation of the EU innovation agenda with a special focus on energy transition. The discourse not only covered the development of technical competences, but also the fundamental changes needed in innovation management.

Biologist and director of Eurac Research Stephan Ortner has drawn a conclusion from the conservation debates of the 1980s and 1990s: science risks its credibility when it meddles in socially contentious issues. Geoecologist and "Scientist for Future" Marc Zebisch believes fine academic restraint is no longer appropriate in the face of the climate catastrophe. The two may disagree on where the line of activism lies, but they do share a conviction: if we want a future worth living, society and science must develop visions together.

"Where do we want to go?"

Eurac Research President Roland Psenner fears that when it comes to the power of facts, science sometimes deludes itself: The feeling of being among the losers can make people rebel even against indisputably correct measures, whether they concern the corona crisis or climate change. Wolfram Sparber, an expert on renewable energy, also sees a lack of social acceptance as the biggest brake on the energy transition. Both are convinced that affluent regions should set a good example in climate protection, but all too often the attitude of "Not in my backyard!” prevails in South Tyrol.

Un team interdisciplinare del centro di ricerca bolzanino ha analizzato il settore dei trasporti, dell’edilizia, dell’energia e dell’agricoltura e il loro inquadramento giuridico. I risultati, presentati in un documento di 180 pagine, sono liberamente accessibili e forniscono dati e scenari dettagliati che possono servire come base di discussione per la politica climatica dell’Alto Adige. Questi risultati sono interessanti anche per chi deve prendere decisioni nei settori dell’agricoltura, dell’industria e del turismo.

La crisi ucraina ha reso la decarbonizzazione ancora più urgente; accanto alla mitigazione del cambiamento climatico, oggi in cima all’agenda troviamo l'indipendenza dalle importazioni di energia. Tuttavia, finché in Italia le procedure di autorizzazione per gli impianti eolici o solari richiedono svariati anni, questa indipendenza resta lontana, afferma l'esperto di energie rinnovabili Wolfram Sparber, che insieme al suo team ha sviluppato scenari dettagliati all’interno di uno studio su come il paese può trarre profitto anche economicamente dalla transizione energetica.

Merano e Bolzano tra i casi studio di un nuovo progetto europeo coordinato da Eurac Research. Obiettivo: aumentare le soluzioni basate sulla natura per mitigare i cambiamenti climatici e migliorare la vivibilità delle città.

Green façades and roof gardens to cool concrete deserts, wetlands as water catchment basins, moss walls that bind fine dust, and more habitats for animals and plants everywhere. Cities around the world are responding to climate change and biodiversity loss with so-called nature-based solutions. A large European research project is developing ways to better exploit the potential with the ambitious goal of ensuring that the advantages primarily benefit the previously disadvantaged.
