When the President of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, called a [surprise general election](https://www.eurac.edu/en/blogs/eureka/early-elections-in-spain-causes-and-prospects) after the poor results of the Socialist Party in the local and regional elections last May, many thought it was a mistake. A desperate move in an attempt to minimize an electoral defeat that would bring the government in Madrid a coalition between the center right of the People’s Party and the radical right of Vox. However, the results showed the wisdom of his decision, which will probably allow him to continue in La Moncloa.

Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) is facing its most serious political crisis since the end of the war in 1995. Due to failed electoral reform negotiations, there is a potential threat that Croat parties might boycott state institutions and block the budget from being passed. This would prevent the 2022 general elections from taking place in October. Amidst the threat of secession by the main Serb parties, this political crisis could lead toward complete institutional erosion and effective dissolution of the state, which has been propped up by international actors for the last 26 years.

The health emergency that Italy has been facing since the first months of 2020 has shed light on the crisis of representative democracy and the free parliamentary mandate, which is not a novelty for the Italian legal system but has definitely been exacerbated by the pandemic. A side effect of this crisis is the increasing weakness of the national Parliament not only when exercising the legislative function, but also in light of the control function vis-à-vis the Government.
