Migration is an important reality for many sub-national autonomous territories where traditional-historical groups live, such as Catalonia, South Tyrol, Scotland, the Basque Country, and Quebec. Some of these territories have attracted migrants for decades, while others have only recently experienced significant migration inflow. The presence of traditional-historical groups brings complexities to the management of migration issues. It is acknowledged that the relationship between ‘old’ communities and the ‘new’ minority groups originating from most recent migration flows (so-called ‘new minorities’) is a complex one. The present webinar aims to discuss whether it is possible to reconcile the claims of long-standing historical communities with those of the new groups originating from most recent migration flows, and whether policies that accommodate long-standing groups and migrants are allies or foes in the pursuit of a pluralist and inclusive society.
