55th Congress of the Italian Society of Neurology (SIN)

On the occasion of 55th Congress of the Italian Society of Neurology (SIN), which took place at the Padua Congress Centre from 24 to 28 October 2025, Dr Marika Falla, a neurologist at our institute, organised a workshop on the Nervous System and Altitude in collaboration with the Italian Society of Mountain Medicine (SIMeM). She was joined by her colleagues Guido Giardini, Head of Neurology in Aosta, and Prof. Angelini from the University of Padua. Prof Angelini opened the session by presenting the recommendations for neurological patients drawn up by the three speakers and endorsed by the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA). Dr Giardini discussed the risk of developing and experiencing recurrent headaches at high altitudes in patients diagnosed with migraines or other primary headaches. He then moved on to discuss the risk of stroke associated with exposure to high altitudes, as well as the potential protective effect of prolonged exposure to moderate altitudes on this risk. Dr Falla spoke about acute mountain sickness and cerebral oedema, which can occur with rapid exposure to high altitudes, as well as lesser-known complications such as high-altitude psychosis and cognitive decline. Professor Angelini discussed the effects of hypoxia and exercise on the muscular system, as well as the role of hypoxia in exacerbating diabetic neuropathy. The symposium generated considerable interest and participation, and it may be repeated in future editions of the congress.
