However, the researchers at the UIAA expressly warn against using this method outside of clinical studies and without expert medical supervision. “Xenon can temporarily increase the release of a particular hormone called erythropoietin or EPO. This hormone stimulates the formation of red blood cells and can improve oxygen supply,” explained Eurac Research’s Hannes Gatterer who studies physical processes at high altitudes who was also a co-author of the publication. “However, this effect is neither long-lasting nor sufficiently researched. Furthermore, the risks, such as respiratory depression, oxygen deficiency, or neurological impairments, are significant.”

According to Gatterer, xenon cannot replace the principle of acclimatization either: Physiological adaptation to high altitudes is a complex process that affects other organ systems besides the blood, including the lungs, brain, heart, and kidneys. Artificially accelerating the adaptation of a single system is therefore not effective. The research team therefore clearly advises against the use of xenon in preparation for or during expeditions to high altitudes, unless it is part of strictly controlled scientific studies with appropriate medical supervision. The statement also warns of the indirect consequences of such “quick fixes”: Anyone who embarks on an expedition without being adequately acclimatized not only increases their own risk but may also endanger the safety of the entire team.
