Lab-grown replicates of human organs are transforming disease research and advancing Precision Health.
Organoids are tiny, three-dimensional structures grown from human cells that can replicate key features of real organs. Though they are not organs themselves, they recreate essential biological functions and offer a dynamic, more accurate way to study how tissues develop, respond to disease, or react to therapies. By cultivating these models in the lab, our scientists can explore complex questions that traditional cell cultures or even animal models often can’t answer.
At the Institute for Biomedicine of Eurac Research, organoids are used to model neurological and developmental conditions such as Parkinson’s disease. These models help researchers observe disease mechanisms as they unfold and test potential treatments in a patient-specific context. Heart organoids, for instance, are capable of beating under the microscope—providing a living system for testing drug responses. Brain organoids can simulate patterns of neurodegeneration or disrupted development, opening up new approaches to understanding complex disorders.
To further enhance these systems, researchers integrate organoids with microfluidic chips—creating organs-on-chip (OoC). These platforms allow our researchers to precisely control the environment around the tissue, mimicking conditions found in the human body more closely than ever before. This next-generation approach supports drug development that is not only more effective but also more ethical, as it reduces the reliance on animal models.
At the Institute for Biomedicine the research on organoids is a key step toward a health-centered approach known as Precision Health. It’s about understanding how diseases develop before symptoms appear, and using that knowledge to develop scientifically grounded strategies for targeted prevention — all with the goal of preserving and improving overall health.
