Architectural Governance

Architecture and regional building culture dominate the landscape and have an impact on the attractiveness of regions and tourist destinations. In particular, architecture, architectural planning and building culture make culture and location-specific aspects a perceptible landscape experiences. We basically distinguish between three strands of development and change of a regional building culture: preservation of monuments and restoration, re-interpretation of traditional building culture and the international style of modernism / postmodernism. The strengths of South Tyrol are in the area of consistent preservation of old architecture and more recently even in the field of modern and contemporary architecture. For the development and formation of a regional architecture, which can be a regional core competence, the integration of the regional cultural specificity is a key success factor.

In form of a comparative analysis, the study compares the Architectural Governance in the five Alpine South Tyrol, Tyrol, Trentino, Vorarlberg and Graubünden. The objective of the project is to elaborate the different coordination possibilities and their implications on the regional ​​architecture, the architectural planning process and the regional building culture. The expression of architecture / building culture is brought in conjunction to the regional regulatory systems and the competence character of the architecture in the context of location and destination management. In addition to a general awareness of the issue, which should be achieved with the project, South-Tyrol- specific recommendations should be derived from the comparative analysis in order to promote and develop strengths and to reduce weaknesses regarding the interaction of building culture and regional development.
