Capercaillie in Focus – Innovative Protection Strategies for Subalpine Biodiversity
The capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) is an emblematic species of the Alps and an indicator of the quality of structurally rich mountain forests. However, it is increasingly threatened by habitat loss, fragmentation, anthropogenic disturbances, and the impacts of climate change. To develop long-term conservation strategies, innovative and large-scale management measures are required. The "Capercaillie in Focus" project aims to develop innovative and large-scale management measures for the protection of the capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) in the Alps and to fill existing knowledge gaps.
Study area: South Tyrol (I) - Vorarlberg (AUT)
The project combines various methods to enable resource-efficient and precise management of the capercaillie. These methods include:
Passive Acoustic Monitoring: The activity patterns, especially of the hens, are systematically recorded to coordinate targeted counts alongside presence-absence data and to verify the efficiency of this resource-efficient monitoring method during the mating season.
Genetics: Genetic monitoring focuses on the South Tyrolean state areas and aims to determine the genetic diversity of the capercaillie population. Samples are collected in winter and genetically analyzed to investigate how the subpopulations interact and whether there are isolated subpopulations.
Spatial Modeling: An existing MaxEnt model for South Tyrol is supplemented by an HSI model that captures the current habitat of the capercaillie. These models provide a basis for comprehensive habitat management and identify areas with special needs through the integration of concepts of ecological connectivity and genetic diversity.
Capercaillie Management: Regional management strategies are developed, tested, and optimized to improve habitats, minimize disturbances, and establish long-term conservation strategies. A central element is the implementation of a monitoring system that can also integrate acoustic methods.
Output: The expected results include an overview of the genetic diversity of the capercaillie population in South Tyrol, the creation of comprehensive planning tools, the establishment of resource-efficient monitoring, and the implementation of habitat improvement measures on pilot sites. Additionally, training events and publications will be conducted to disseminate knowledge about the capercaillie and promote its conservation. Another important aspect is the promotion of ecological connectivity to improve habitat networking and support the long-term preservation of the capercaillie population.
