CoupEvent: Hillslope - Channel coupling during extreme events in South Tyrol

The main aim of the COUPEVENT project is to analyze the coupling of hillslope processes with the channel network at the event scale in South Tyrol. The COUPEVENT project will develop and test a novel multidisciplinary scientific framework for the understanding of the sediment supply connectivity between mass wasting processes and the channel network during extreme events. COUPEVENT will address its purposes at different spatial scales, from the single landslide/channel reach interaction to the channel network at the regional scale (Autonomous Province of Bozen-Bolzano).

The project will use the area of South Tyrol as study area for calibration and validation, but it will be then applicable in other mountain regions worldwide with similar Alpine characteristics.

The main goal of the project will be achieved addressing the following aims:

1) to provide a basin-scale, evidence-based understanding of hillslopes-channels coupling during extreme events.

2) To develop a new GIS-based tool (ILC, index of landslides connectivity) addressing sediment transport efficiency from landslides /debris flows to the channel network.

The project is financed by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano-Bozen (Bando di concorso mobilità di ricercatrici e ricercatori 2019)
