DairyPathS

Agroecological pathways for sustainable, resilient and diversified dairy farming systems in Europe

DairyPathS supports the agroecological transformation of European dairy farming by co-designing region-specific solutions through Living Labs (LLs), where stakeholders collaboratively develop and evaluate sustainable systems. The project combines multi-scale modelling with multicriteria assessment (DEXi-Dairy) to analyse environmental, economic and social impacts and identify trade-offs and barriers to adoption.

Eurac Research establishes and facilitates the LL in South Tyrol, where stakeholders co-develop and test agroecological innovations through workshops, participatory processes and qualitative interviews. This provides insights into farmers’ perspectives and broader social dynamics, analyse adoption drivers, and contribute to socio-economic indicators and policy-relevant recommendations.

DairyPathS supports the agroecological transformation of European dairy farming by co-designing region-specific solutions in Living Labs (LLs) across Europe. Within these LLs, farmers, advisors, researchers and policymakers jointly develop and assess agroecological scenarios adapted to local conditions.

The project is structured across interconnected work packages. In WP2, LLs drive the co-design process and stakeholder engagement. The scenarios are then modelled in WP3 using crop-livestock and agent-based modelling approaches to assess system performance under current and future climate conditions. WP4 evaluates biodiversity and ecosystem services. WP5 brings together environmental, economic and social assessments and evaluates synergies and trade-offs using an improved DEXi-Dairy framework.

Eurac Research contributes by establishing and facilitating the LL in South Tyrol. In Task 5.4, Eurac analyses social drivers and barriers to adoption through in-depth interviews, workshops and participatory processes. The results inform the development of socio-economic indicators, policy recommendations and decision-support tools.
