Sub-seasonal and seasonal prediction of snow cover dynamics in complex mountain terrain: integrating snow simulations with weather forecasts and satellite-based snow data
Fram3S aims to advance sub-seasonal and seasonal prediction of snow cover dynamics in complex Alpine terrain by integrating weather forecasts, satellite-based snow data, and physically-based snow modelling. The project focuses on the EUREGIO region (Tyrol–South Tyrol–Trentino), developing a high-resolution forecasting framework that combines multivariate bias-adjusted weather data, machine learning-derived depletion curves, and the openAMUNDSEN snow model. Outputs include spatially distributed forecasts of snow cover, melt rates, and runoff contributions, supporting water resource management and climate adaptation. EURAC leads satellite data processing and machine learning-based depletion curve modelling, contributing to data assimilation and evaluation. The project is supported by the Euregio Science Fund.
