FROST.INI

FROST.INI project is financed by the Interreg ITA-AU 2021-2027 program. The main research topic it addresses is the analysis of the degradation conditions of permafrost in high altitude environment in the context of climate change and in relation with high mountain infrastructures. An analysis integrating in-situ measurements and remote sensing data will be extended to some pilot sites in the Alpine border area. The outcome will promote i) the understanding of the interaction between infrastructures and permafrost and ii) its current state and possible evolution in relation to climatic impacts, iii) the creation of digital twins for two selected pilot sites and iv) the production of guidelines from the project experiences.  

The Institute for Earth Observation at Eurac has extensive expertise in processing remote sensing data, particularly in mapping and monitoring Alpine dynamics. It will lead activities related to characterizing displacement trends at the pilot sites. This project will contribute to refining analytical routines for remote sensing-based permafrost characterization and deepen the understanding of the key processes driving observed deformations.
