This research area focuses on integration and migration governance in South Tyrol. We analyse the role of different local actors in political decision-making processes – from provincial policymakers and municipal integration councillors to civil society organisations, and trace the attitudes and perceptions of South Tyroleans with and without a migration background with regards to migration and diversity.

In close collaboration with the Coordination Unit for Integration of the Autonomous Province of Bozen/Bolzano, we systematically and critically monitor and evaluate the provincial policies, initiatives and pluriannual plans in the field of migration and integration governance. We provide evidence-based input to stakeholders and policymakers and coordinate the Annual Report on Migration and Integration in South Tyrol. As coopted member of the Provincial Council for Integration, we also consult and enter into dialogue with other stakeholders and migrant representatives.  Results are also published in academic journals, contributing to academic conversations on multilevel migration and integration governance.

One of our primary areas of focus is the governance of integration at both the municipal and district levels. This research builds on earlier studies conducted on local integration policymaking. By delving deeper into the dynamics of local governance, we explore the roles that both formal and informal networks play in shaping and implementing integration policies. Understanding these interactions not only highlights the collaborative efforts necessary for effective governance but also reveals potential gaps and areas for improvement in policy execution.

Furthermore, we conduct comprehensive qualitative and quantitative studies to assess the perceptions and attitudes of the South Tyrolean population concerning migration, discrimination, and diversity. By analyzing the sentiments of individuals both with and without a migration background, we strive to uncover underlying biases, areas of support, and opportunities for fostering a more inclusive society. This research is crucial for identifying the factors that influence public opinion and can ultimately inform strategies to combat discrimination and promote social cohesion. Our findings not only contribute valuable insights to policymakers but also serve to enrich academic discourse on migration and integration, ensuring that our research plays a vital role in shaping future governance approaches in South Tyrol.
