2b/2021: Migrant Integration in Multi-level Systems

Immigration and the integration of migrants, both from other member states and from outside the Union, are a highly topical issue and pose a particular challenge to the European multi-level system. It is evident that this challenge requires multiple and coordinated action at different levels of government: local, regional, national and European. For this reason, the institute initiated in 2011 a new project focusing on the role of local and regional entities in this increasingly important policy field. The research conducted since then on migrant integration in multi-level systems has been comparative in nature, which is facilitated by continuous collaboration with local partners as well as researchers in other European countries and Canada. The results of this research form the basis for publications, all targeted at different stakeholders, as well as for recommendations to policy-makers.

Within Italy, the institute participated, for instance, in the project “La lingua come fattore di integrazione sociale e politica” (“Language as a Factor of Social and Political Integration”), financed by the Italian Government under the 2013-2016 PRIN funding scheme. Internationally, research results are regularly presented at international conferences and published in scientific journals as well as in edited collections. Another recent output is a special focus edited for the European Yearbook on Minority Issues entitled “Regional Citizenship: A Tool for the Inclusion of New Minorities in Subnational Entities?”.
