SMEM

Soil Moisture Ensemble Method

The main aim of the project is to develop advanced approaches for soil moisture (SM) and vegetation water content (VWC) retrieval, that are able to integrate the phase and intensity component of the SAR signal and fully exploit the synergy between the C- and L-band information. The SMEM activity is aimed at overcoming some of the current limitations of SM and VWC retrieval related to complex terrain, highly vegetated and arid areas. The involvement of selected users as observers indicates that the envisaged results of the project can support regional operational priorities in hydrology and water management by fostering the use of EO-based products, as well as serving the science community, including contributions to international science initiatives that are concerned with hydrology and environmental research.
The EURAC role in the project will be related to the Scientific Requirement Consolidation, Generation of the Input Reference Database Collection, Implementation of the SM and VWC algorithms and validation activities. This project strengthens EURAC activities dedicate to the hydrological variables and supports the consolidation of soil moisture products with development to take into account the specific characteristics of mountain areas.
