The project aims to establish guided grazing with shepherds as a nature-based measure to promote biodiversity, pasture quality, and landscape management
in South Tyrol and Tyrol. It identifies supporting and hindering factors, collects scientific data on effectiveness, and develops an innovative funding model that
accounts for the additional workload of shepherds. In so-called Living Labs—selected pastures with guided grazing—vegetation, zoological, and labor time
surveys are conducted. Based on cross-border cooperation and best practices in contractual nature conservation, a participatory implementation and funding
model is developed to anchor guided grazing at political, social, and administrative levels. Training sessions raise awareness of this sustainable land use, and
cross-border collaboration enables data and best practice exchange. The project strengthens ecological and agricultural resilience, regional identity, and the
social recognition of the shepherd profession, contributing to the implementation of the EU Biodiversity Strategy and the Nature Restoration Law.
