Various strategic documents and studies, among others from WIFO and Astat show that the South Tyrolean economy has several structural weaknesses, which, inter alia, be manifest itself in an increase in unemployment (from 2.7% in 2004 to 4.1% in 2012 and to 4.5% in 2013). Furthermore, there do exist underused potentials in the framework of horizontal and vertical cooperation and networking along value chains. Further characteristics in this regards are a high level of employment in the public sector, the extreme small size of the South Tyrolean companies. The aim is that the Institute for Regional Development and Location Management becomes in South Tyrol the thematic leader in issues related tp the regional economy. The Institute should be more involved in current debates on “Creation of jobs" and "economic development" dealing with the aspects of "employment". Mainly the projects will be oriented towards the development of innovative projects, which secure jobs and create new ones.
