MB-3 is a synthetic, lab-created molecule used to limit the activity of the enzyme GCN5 which reduces the accumulation of fat in heart cells that characterize arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy – a disease that has affected young sportsmen such as Livorno soccer player Piermario Morosini and Asiago field hockey player Darcy Robinson. The discovery by a team of biologists from Eurac Research comes after several years of research in collaboration with the Medical University of Innsbruck, the Monzino Cardiology Center and the University of Milan.

A young athlete suddenly collapses in the middle of the sports field. The rescue team is unable to bring the young person back to life and can only determine cardiac arrest as cause of death. Cases like this are reported again and again and raise the question of how such a tragedy could happen so abruptly. One of the most common causes of sudden cardiac death in young people is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a congenital genetic disorder that affects one in 500. The underlying mechanisms are currently being investigated in the HYPER-FIBRO project.

Data from the CHRIS population study provides the basis for understanding what makes some people resistant to hypertension therapies. The HyperProfile study research team uses biomarkers to measure the effectiveness of certain drugs on one of the biological processes that regulate blood pressure. The next step will be to cross-reference this data with genetic data.
