Small tourism destinations in the European Alps are under increasing pressure to adapt. But what does effective climate adaptation actually look like?

In a comprehensive structural analysis of five destinations across Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Switzerland and Germany, the researchers Philipp Corradini and Agnese Moroni uncover clear and recurring adaptation pathways. Their findings highlight three key strategies:

• Offer-led diversification to reduce climate dependency

• Stronger intra- and interdestination cooperation

• Targeted communication and marketing efforts

The study shows that isolated adjustments are not enough. Instead, successful climate adaptation requires a strategic sequence of feasible and scalable measures, tailored to local challenges, governance structures, and long-term sustainability visions.
