An empirical assessment of commercial agritourism in South Tyrol/Italy
The study examines the growing number of high-quality commercial agritourism businesses in South Tyrol and explores how increasing tourism revenues may affect the economic balance between farming and tourism activities. Since agritourism is intended to complement (not replace) agricultural production, the authors investigate whether current developments align with this goal or not.
Using two calculation models to compare revenue streams, the study provides new insights into the economic structure of agritourism farms and relates the findings to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 2.3, 8.9, 11a, 12b, and 15.4). The results reveal that, in some cases, substantial imbalances exist between agricultural and tourism income. The authors therefore recommend a more balanced relationship between farm and tourism structures to strengthen resilience and promote sustainable rural development.
